World Child Hunger Facts
Nutritious foods in adequate amounts are essential for everyone but particularly for children. In early childhood, adequate nutrition can ensure healthy growth, proper organ formation and function, a strong immune system, and neurological and cognitive development. Nutrition, too, has increasingly been recognized as a basic pillar for social and economic development. Well-nourished people can learn new skills, think critically and contribute to their communities. Improving child nutrition impacts global, national and regional child survival, primary education, women’s empowerment, and maternal and child health rates.
On the flip side, child malnutrition hurts cognitive function and contributes to poverty by impeding people’s ability to lead productive lives. Poverty is the leading cause of hunger, but poverty also results from hunger, in a cyclical relationship. In spite of the importance of childhood nutrition and significant progress in the last 25 years, global childhood hunger is still rampant.
Overall, 5.6 million children under age five died in 2016, nearly 15,000 daily (World Health Organization [WHO], 2016). The risk of a child dying before five years of age is highest in Africa (76.5 per 1000 live births), about 8 times higher than in Europe (9.6 per 1000 live births) (WHO, 2016).
Approximately 3.1 million children die from undernutrition each year (UNICEF, 2018a). Hunger and undernutrition contribute to more than half of global child deaths, as undernutrition can make children more vulnerable to illness and exacerbate disease (UNICEF, 2018a).
Children who are poorly nourished suffer up to 160 days of illness each year (Glicken, M.D., 2010). Undernutrition magnifies the effect of every disease including measles and malaria. The estimated proportions of deaths in which undernutrition is an underlying cause are roughly similar for diarrhea (61%), malaria (57%), pneumonia (52%), and measles (45%) (Black, Morris, & Bryce, 2003; Bryce et al., 2005). Malnutrition can also be caused by diseases, such as the diseases that cause diarrhea, by reducing the body’s ability to convert food into usable nutrients (Black, Morris, & Bryce, 2003; Bryce et al., 2005)
66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, 23 million whom live in Africa, which greatly impacts their ability to learn (World Food Programme [WFP], 2012).

UNDERSTANDING CHILDHOOD MALNUTRITION
STUNTING (children significantly below standard height for their age)
Globally, about 151 million under-five-year-olds are estimated to be stunted in 2013.(UNICEF, WHO and The World Bank, 2018).
The global trend in stunting prevalence and numbers affected is decreasing. Between 2000 and 2017, stunting prevalence declined from 33% to 22% and numbers declined from 198 million to 151 million (UNICEF, 2018a). However, the regions of West and Central Africa have actually seen an increase in numbers of stunted children – from about 23 million to 29 million (UNICEF, 2018a).
In 2017, about half of all stunted children lived in Asia and over one third in Africa (UNICEF, WHO & The World Bank, 2018). Stunting is a public health problem but often goes unrecognized.
UNDERWEIGHT (children significantly below standard weight for their age)
Globally, 99 million under-five-year-olds were underweight in 2013, most of whom lived in Asia and Africa (Krasevec et al., 2014). The global trend in underweight prevalence continues to decrease; going from 25% to 13.5% between 1990 and 2017 (The World Bank, 2017).
The underweight prevalence in Africa decreased from 23% in 1990 to 17% in 2013, while in Asia, for the same period, the prevalence was reduced from 32% to 18%. In Latin America and the Caribbean the underweight prevalence decreased from 8% to 3% (Krasevec et al., 2014).
WASTING (children significantly below standard height to weight ratios)
Globally, 51 million under-five-year-olds were wasted and 16 million were severely wasted (UNICEF 2018a)
Wasting prevalence is estimated at 7.5% and severe wasting prevalence at 2.4% (UNICEF, 2018a).
Wasting in the under-five-year-olds group decreased by 13% from 1990 to 2013.
In 2017, approximately two thirds of all wasted children lived in Asia (mostly in South-Central Asia) and about one-quarter in Africa, with similar proportions for severely wasted children (UNICEF, 2018a)
MICRONUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES (Micronutrient – vital minerals and vitamins – deficiencies are caused by disease or inadequate consumption of nutritious foods).
Vitamin A deficiency affects about a third of children in low and middle-income countries, which increase a child’s risk of contracting infectious diseases by weakening the immune system (UNICEF, 2018b).
Zinc deficiency in low-income countries affects the immune and gastrointestinal systems, contributing to a major cause in under-five deaths – diarrhea (UNICEF, 2018b).
About 30% of the world’s population lives in areas where diets do not contain sufficient amounts of iodine, resulting in poor brain development (UNICEF, 2018b). The lack of micronutrients in children can be greatly influenced by the mother’s health, especially during pregnancy. In low-income countries, pregnant women who are malnourished may lack essential micronutrients for fetal development, such as iodine, zinc, iron, folate and vitamin D (Gernand et al., 2016).
For example, low iron in the mother can result in low birthweight of the infant, increasing the infant’s susceptibility to disease, a known contributor in the cycle of malnutrition (Gernand et. al., 2016).
According to UNICEF (2018b), about 40% of pregnant women and 40% of children under five years of age in developing countries are anemic, half of whom are estimated to be iron deficient.
THE DOUBLE BURDEN OF MALNUTRITION (The coexistence of undernutrition and overnutrition within individuals, families or populations)
Malnutrition encompasses both undernutrition and overnutrition. Some countries face this double burden of malnutrition, where undernutrition occurs along with overweight, obesity or diet-related diseases (WHO, 2017).
In some countries, like Egypt, Iraq and Vanuatu, for example, stunting is greater than 20% of their under-five population, while adult obesity is greater than 20% (FAO et al., 2017).
This double burden is becoming increasingly common in low and middle-income countries (WHO, 2017).
Globally, about 41 million children under five years old were overweight or obese (WHO, 2017).
About 155 million children under five years old were chronically undernourished (WHO, 2017). *
Undernourishment is a general term for receiving insufficient food and nutrients for growth (Merriam-Webster, 2018). It may lead to a child being underweight, a term that describes an individual below the median body measurements (weight for age) for a population (UNICEF, n.d.).

What are some contributors? Early life nutrition. The amount of nutrition received during the fetal development period can determine much of the child’s future health (WHO, 2017). o Low birthweight infants are at higher risk for metabolic disease (conditions that include high cholesterol and high blood sugar) (WHO, 2017). o On the other hand, women who are overweight during pregnancy may have infants with larger weight, placing them at greater risk for obesity later (WHO, 2017).
Socioeconomic status and inequality. Low socioeconomic status impacts a family’s ability to buy adequately nutritious food (WHO, 2017).
While upper and middle-income countries have the highest prevalence of overweight, the prevalence in low and middle-income countries is still sizeable ¬– between 10% and 30% (WHO, 2017).
Food Systems. Diets high in saturated fats, salt and sugar are becoming more prominent, replacing nutritious diets, as they are sometimes more affordable or accessible (WHO, 2017). This is good news, but overall progress on malnutrition is insufficient, and millions of children remain hungry. Any child suffering from these conditions is at substantial increased risk of severe, acute malnutrition, illness and death.
COMBATING CHILD HUNGER
Medical Treatment of Child Malnutrition While some hunger prevention practices involve better access to nutritious foods and health care, as well as improving water and sanitation, short-term solutions for severe undernutrition commonly use ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF). Used to treat undernourished children under five years of age, RUTF is ideal for treatment at home; it contains micronutrients, does not need to be cooked, and can be stored for a long time (UNICEF, 2015).
Large Scale Approaches
In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations sets global goals to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger (FAO et al., 2017).
Approaches by international organizations and programs to combat child hunger in lower-middle-income countries involve agriculture sustainability; emphasis on maternal health, education and empowerment; community and household education on nutrition; and partnerships with governments to fortify micronutrient levels in food.
Below are examples of some of the work in eradicating child hunger:
UNICEF (UNICEF, 2018b) Community-based approach to promote breastfeeding and encourage diet diversity, involving a variety of local foods; Vitamin A supplementation programs for children under-five-years old; Support of government programs to supplement iron folic acid supplementation during pregnancy to ensure proper fetal development; Support governments in implementing mass food fortification – for example, universal salt iodization.
World Food Programme (WFP, 2018) Invest in the agricultural supply chain and rural infrastructure (roads to transport food and ways to store food); Encourage the expansion of social protection (in some countries, in the form of cash transfers) for the poorest 2 billion in the world, creating the potential for economic growth so that poor households can afford proper food and medical care.

Psychologists have long known that people tend to favor their own group over others, a social phenomenon known as ingroup bias. But new research provides evidence that atheists are motivated to buck this trend in an attempt to override the stereotype that they are immoral.
Psychology researchers from Ohio University found that Christians demonstrated an ingroup bias towards other Christians in an economic game but atheists did not have an ingroup bias towards other atheists. The study was published online July 10 in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.
“The rise of the so-called ‘New Atheists’ about a decade ago coupled with the ongoing ‘culture wars’ between religious and secular groups in the United States has led atheists as a population to gain an unprecedented level of visibility in this country in recent years, even as their prevalence has only incrementally increased. This has sparked a particular interest in anti-atheist prejudice research in social psychology,” explained study author Colleen Cowgill, a PhD student.
“From this previous research, we know that the general population in America tends to stereotype atheists as being immoral and untrustworthy – a reputation that many atheists understandably find distressing. My primary interest was in how atheists themselves respond to these negative stereotypes.”
“Psychological research has demonstrated repeatedly that individuals facing negative stereotypes are not passive observers of this social landscape, but rather are impacted and react in a dynamic way to negative group-level judgments important to their identities,” Cowgill told PsyPost. “One example of this is stereotype threat, or the phenomenon wherein negative stereotypes about a group’s performance on a particular task can lead to decreased performance for individuals who belong to that group, regardless of their actual ability.
“The psychological stress of fearing that your performance may confirm a negative stereotype about your group serves to limit the cognitive resources you have available for performing well on the task. Another example of this is people’s response to what is termed ‘identity threat,’ or the threat of being disparaged or discriminated against due to one’s group membership. We often see that negative stereotypes about a group can lead members of that group to behave in compensatory ways that ostensibly seek to disconfirm that stereotype, such as when American immigrants strive to emphasize their American identity when it is threatened.”
“This was the rationale behind my hypotheses stating that atheists’ behavior toward Christians in economic games might be different from Christians’ behavior toward atheists in economic games,” Cowgill said. “In the same way that many White Americans are often stereotyped as racist and have consequently been shown by research to be particularly motivated to be liked by Black Americans during interracial interactions, I thought that atheists would be uniquely motivated to disconfirm negative stereotypes about their amorality or untrustworthy nature during interactions with Christians.”
“I chose to operationalize this through an economic game because I thought it would be an ideal paradigm to capture constructs like ‘generosity’ and ‘fairness,’ which can directly relate to ideas of morality and trustworthiness. Indeed, we found in multiple studies that our atheist participants behaved more fairly towards partners they believed were Christians than our Christians participants behaved towards partners they believed were atheists, which are results that appear to support the original hypotheses.”
“These effects disappeared when the participant’s own religious identity was concealed. Under those conditions, atheists and Christians demonstrated the same typically observed in-group bias, which rules out the possibility that the results could be entirely explained due to discrimination on the part of the Christians.”
The economic game was a modified version of the Dictator Game, in which one person (the dictator) is asked to share a monetary reward with another person who can only passively accept what is offered.
A pilot study with 205 participants revealed that people believed atheists would treat Christians unfairly. But three experiments, which included nearly 1,200 U.S. residents, found almost the opposite was true.
“I think that the average person should understand how the stereotypes saturating our society can create a variety of underlying subtexts during interactions between individuals, often leading people to maintain differential goals when they communicate and cooperate,” Cowgill remarked.
“Oftentimes, we’re not even directly aware of these dynamics. We absorb what our society reflects to us about how to perceive groups of people, how to perceive ourselves, and how others view us, then we carry these expectations with us into our everyday interactions, leading to myriad unexpected outcomes both positive and negative.”
When everyone’s religious affiliation was disclosed, Christian participants offered more money to fellow Christians than to atheists. However, this ingroup bias was not observed among atheist participants, who gave equally to atheists and Christians.
When their own religious identity was concealed from the other participants, however, atheists gave more money to their fellow atheists than to Christians. Presumably, they were less motivated to counter the stereotype that they were immoral. The behavior of Christians was unchanged.
“In this case, atheists appear to have been motivated by negative stereotypes to behave more prosocially. Although that may seem like a net positive, the mechanisms at work here may carry some more troublesome implications,” Cowgill told PsyPost.
“For instance, on a more speculative note, I think it is quite telling that atheists are perhaps so acutely aware of negative stereotypes about themselves that there are observable differences in their behavior as compared with Christians in even this small, low-stakes type of interaction. Arguably, they are on some level aware of a pretty serious stigma about their identity.”
“Might that stigma consciousness create obstacles for a talented atheist interested in doing something like running for political office or spearheading a charitable organization — endeavors that could be said to require a trustworthy reputation?” Cowgill wondered. “It’s hard to say, but I think research like this in the aggregate begins to build a case that there may be these kinds of hidden costs to the prevalent, unchallenged negative stereotyping in our society.”
Like all research, the current study has some limitations.
“It’s always worthwhile to keep in mind that the differences in behavior observed here between Christians and atheists, while unlikely due to chance given the number of participants and replications, may be explained by some alternative narrative the researchers have overlooked,” Cowgill said. “We did our best to rule out alternative explanations, such as that atheists were simply being discriminated against by Christians, but of course complete certainty can never be achieved.”
Some have also raised questions about whether atheists really consider themselves as part of a cohesive group.
“I think future work should continue to explore how atheists, agnostics, or religious minorities, such as Muslims, are impacted and respond to negative stereotypes or even outright discrimination towards their groups,” Cowgill said. “It seems likely that these findings would extend to other groups stereotyped as untrustworthy such that those groups would be motivated to ‘advertise’ their altruism, fairness, compassion, or overall level of morality.”
“Future work should also look at the some of the downsides to awareness of these negative stereotypes about one’s group. Do atheists demonstrate stereotype threat effects in tasks described as being related to moral competence? Does stigma consciousness limit atheists or religious minorities in a significant way or lead to negative health outcomes? All of these questions remain largely unexplored or in need of more in-depth research.”

Candlemas (also spelled Candlemass), is also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ and the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Christian Holy Day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. It is based upon the account of the presentation of Jesus in Luke 2:22–40 which is the gospel today.
We had a short procession after the blessing of candles outside the church. We had to light at least one candle while going inside the church. It was a lovely celebration with our good friend Fr. Aly officiating. All my candles at home were previously blessed and we usually use them at the altar during prayers at home. It is better to light a candle than to stumble in the dark.
Tomorrow is the Feast of St. Blaise. Blaise is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic church. A doctor, he is a patron saint of those sufferers from throat diseases. I told Nissa to hear mass too so her throat would be blessed.

Celebrating Candlemas Day
Learn about the origins of Candlemas day plus ways to celebrate this Pagan holiday which promises of the return of the light and the renewal of life.
Feb. 2 is one of the great cross-quarter days which make up the wheel of the year. It falls midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox and in many traditions is considered the beginning of spring.
In Western Europe, this was the time for preparing the fields for the first planting. Pamela Berger has written a book, The Goodess Obscured: Transformation of the Grain Protectress from Goddess to Saint, about the rituals celebrated at this time of year, when the ground is first awakened and the seed placed in the belly of the earth. This is a significant moment in a community which depends on the earth for sustenance. The fields were purified and offerings were made to the goddess.
The promises of the return of the light and the renewal of life which were made at the winter solstice are now becoming manifest. It’s the dawn of the year. It’s the time when a woman who is pregnant begins showing. It’s time to creep out of the hibernation of winter, cautiously, like the Ground Hog who supposedly emerges on this day to check his shadow. It’s the time of germination. This is a traditional time for new beginnings. Covens of witches usually initiate new members at this time.
What is the best way to celebrate? Candles and Christmas Greens The main element of your decorating scheme for Candlemas is fairly obvious: candles. You can gather all the candles in your home in one room and light them from one central candle. Or place a candle in each window (but watch them carefully).
Candlemas is one of the traditional times for taking down Christmas decorations (Twelfth Night, on Jan. 6, is the other). If you are very careful (because they are tinder dry), you can burn them. Or, better yet, return them to the earth mother by using them for compost or mulch.
Certain foods are traditional for Candlemas, including crepes, pancakes and cakes, all grain-based foods. Pancakes and crepes are considered symbols of the sun because of their round shape and golden color.
If you have a fireplace, clean out your hearth and light a new fire. Sit around the fire and reflect on your hopes for the coming year. What do you hope to accomplish? What are you passionate about? What seeds do you wish to plant? Discuss these ideas with others or write them down in a journal, but make them concrete in some way so that on Lammas (Aug. 2, the festival of the first harvest), you can look back to see your progress.
Brigid is the goddess of creative inspiration as well as reproductive fertility. This is a good time for sharing creative work, or, if you don’t think of yourself as especially creative, an idea that worked or a plan that materialized. Thank the Goddess for her inspiration, perhaps by dedicating a future work to her.

During this ritual, the flames in a cauldron represent Brigid’s Sacred Flame, the fire of inspiration and passion, while a punch bowl filled with waters gathered from all over the world represents Brigid’s Holy Well, the source of healing and purification.
If you plan your own ceremony, use these two powerful symbols: fire and water. For instance, wash your hands and bathe your face in salt water, which is especially good for purification. Light a candle as you make your pledge. Incorporate the third symbol of the holiday–seeds–by planting a seed or bulb in a pot to symbolize your commitment, or by blessing a bowl or packet of seeds that you will plant later.
Since the Christian season of Lent can sometimes begin as early as Feb. 4, some Candlemas customs have became associated with Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (the day before Lent’s beginning on Ash Wednesday), which is a time of purification.
Have you ever given anything up for Lent? If not, you might consider it. You don’t have to be Christian to gain spiritual benefits from the voluntary surrender of something you cherish. You can give up something frivolous or something serious, but it should be something you will notice. Folk wisdom says it takes six weeks (or approximately the 40 days of Lent) to establish a new habit, so you may end up with a lifestyle change.
The kids in our neighborhood have eagerly embraced the idea of giving up something for Lent. We know one little girl who gave up TV for Lent and another who gave up catsup, her favorite food. In the last two years, I’ve given up alcohol and coffee for Lent. Forty days is enough time to notice the difference in the way you feel without a favorite substance or distraction.
Since Candlemas is often considered the beginning of spring, you can perform another ritual act of purification: spring cleaning. This would be a good time to do a thorough house cleaning, sweeping the floors with salt water, banishing the gloom of winter and creating a sparkling, shiny new setting for spring.
In Ireland, this holy day is called Imbolc and begins at sunset on Feb. 1, continuing through sunset Feb. 2. There are different derivations offered for the name Imbolc: from Ol-melc (ewe’s milk) because the ewes are lactating at this time, from Im-bolg (around the belly) in honor of the swelling belly of the earth goddess, and from folcaim (I wash) because of the rites of purification which took place at this time. All of these explanations capture the themes of this festival.
Feb. 1 is the feast day of St. Brigid, who began her life as a pagan goddess and ended up a Christian saint. She was a fire and fertility goddess. In her temple at Kildare, vestal virgins tended an eternal fire. On her feast day, her statue was washed in the sea (purification) and then carried in a cart through the fields surrounded by candles.
The legends about the goddess, Brigid, gradually became associated with (the somewhat spurious) Saint Brigid who founded the first convent in Ireland (where else?) at Kildare.
To celebrate St. Brigid’s day, people put a loaf of bread on the windowsill for the Saint and an ear of corn for her white cow, offerings for the grain goddess like the loaf buried in the first furrow. A small quantity of special seeds are mixed with those to be sown. Wheat stalks are woven into X-shaped crosses to serve as charms to protect home from fire and lightning.
In the Highlands, women dress the corn doll or last sheaf (from Lammas or the autumn equinox) in a bridal gown and put her in a basket, which is called the Bride’s bed. A wand, candle or other phallic object is laid across her and Bride is invited to come, for her bed is ready.
Later the Catholic Church superimposed a Christian holiday on this pagan festival. Jewish women went through a purification ceremony 40 days after the birth of a male child (80 days after the birth of a female child). So in the 6th century, Feb. 2 (39 days after Christmas) was declared the feast of the Purification of Mary. The theme of purification remained a link between the two holy days.
Like many miraculous babies, Jesus is recognized as a future hero from the time of his infancy. One of these recognitions occurs in Luke 2:21 when he is being presented in the temple (at the time of Mary’s purification ) and a holy man, Simeon, recognizes him as the Christ, calling him “a light for revelation.”
This is the ostensible reason given for the custom of bringing candles to church to be blessed by the priest on Feb. 2. Our Constitution is shot through, warp and woof, with the thinking of Christian statesmen who shared a deep-dyed view of the world, soaked deeply in the Bible.
The Founders included plenty of Deists and Christians who bear no resemblance to the conservatives of today. The Constitution they wrote explicitly rejected any sort of national religion — even subtly. (As the saying goes, the word “religion” appears twice in the Constitution, both times preceded by the word “no.”) You get the idea. Fischer lives in a fantasy world where his religion has always made everything better. That’s never been true. It’s certainly not true today.
Which means the Christian Nationalism that Fischer professes is nothing more than the racist, bigoted, hate-fueled movement that currently thrives in the White House and Republican politics. Trying to shine that shit by pretending it’s patriotic doesn’t make things any better.
The world is full of hypocrisy, but in no other area except politics does it seem almost mandatory than in religion. Leviticus 19:33,34 : ‘When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong.’The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God
Deuteronomy 10:18-19: He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.
Jeremiah 7:5-7: “For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly execute justice one with another, if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.
